Susan Drake, M.S., R.D.
Susan Drake, a Colorado native, is a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist
holding a Certification in Weight Management through the Academy
of Nutrition and Dietetics. She graduated from Colorado State
University with her Bachelor of Science in 1991 and received her
Masters in Nutrition and Dietetics from Eastern Illinois University in
1994. She has been a Registered Dietitian since 1994.
During her 19-year career, she has had a vast array of experiences in
the nutrition field. She coached hundreds of clients on their journey to
weight loss, weight maintenance and wellness at Dr. Lazarus's Clinical
Nutrition Center in Denver for 6 years. After leaving Clinical Nutrition
Center, she worked for Microlife MedicalHome Solutions implementing
weight loss programs based on measuring metabolism. "It's important
to measure resting metabolism and not just estimate. Many weight
scales that estimate caloric needs, over estimate. Understanding
how many calories are needed in a day will significantly increase
one's knowledge and how to maintain or lose weight. In addition,
by measuring metabolism, I have been able to direct clients to their
physician to have their Thyroid checked. If a metabolism is significantly
slow, Hypothyroidism may be present".
Since leaving Microlife Medical Home Solutions, she has been focused
on developing her own weight loss program. Healthin12 was created
based on her own experiences and science. It incorporates 12 weeks
of educational modules, food and exercise logging platforms and
a behavioral health component. All aspects are key for long-term
success. The program will be launched in August.
Her philosophy is to eat clean and in moderation as well as stay active
to increase energy and be healthy. She also works with clients to set
realistic goals. Setting unrealistic goals can lead to frustration and
failure. Her approach is to lose weight by taking a "stair step" approach.
Meaning, lose 5 - 10% of a current body weight and learn to maintain
it. Once maintenance is achieved, shoot for another 5 - 10% if that
is desired. Take it slow, no miracle diets, no magic pills and life-long
success can be mastered. It's all about mastering new habits.
In her spare time, she enjoys hiking with her 2 Labradoodles - Joe
and Allie, traveling, cooking, gardening and golf to name a few. Any
activity, summer or winter, as long as it's outside, is where she likes to be.
Scott McDoniel, PhD, FACN, FTOS
Dr. Scott attended New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI) on an Army R.O.T.C scholarship with the intent of being a commissioned officer
in the United States Army. However, a knee injury while playing football for the Broncos ended his dream of serving his country. His second passion
was exercise and understanding how the body responds and adapts to physical activity. After graduating from NMMI he transferred to Wichita State
University to complete his Bachelor and Master Degrees in Exercise Science. While at Wichita State, he served as a Graduate Assistant, Strength &
Conditioning Coach with the Shocker Athletic Department. In 2008, Dr. Scott obtained his Doctorate in Psychology with a focus towards health and
behavioral medicine. His primary focus is obesity management and functional nutrition. He provides a comprehensive model to treating patients with
excess weight including addressing mental, environmental, and biological issues leading to or preventing weight loss. Dr. Scott is comprehensively
trained in exercise science, nutrition, and psychology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition and The Obesity Society.
In addition, to patient care, Dr. Scott is an international expert on energy metabolism. He worked for a small biotechnology company assisting in
the development and launch of novel device to measure metabolism. During this time, he conducted numerous research studies measuring metabolism and
presented at international medical conferences on the science of energy metabolism in clinical weight management. He was influential in NBC's
The Biggest Loser implementation of metabolic assessment with their contestants. While working for this company he developed a clinical weight
loss program that was designed to be implemented into physician practices. He spent three years expanding this program to physician practices across
the United States. In 2010, missing direct patient care, he returned to private practice to better serve patients. He continues his private practice in
the Denver Tech Center.
Dr. Scott maintains his research interest by serving as an assistant professor with Walden University's College of Health Sciences.
He is an active mentor for students obtaining their doctorates in public health with a focus towards obesity research. Outside of practice and mentoring,
he is very active in youth sports. He is volunteer football coach for both of his boys. In addition, he serves as an assistant wrestling coach
for Mountain Vista High School and head coach for the Golden Eagle Wrestling Club, Pre-K through 8th grade youth wrestling program.
